The Ridgeback is the cheap anti-chaff pack: 5 hunter frames for 75, each with 1,318 hp, trotting at 1.0 tile a second (10 m/s), with a twin scattergun that blasts 246 damage every 2.4 s out to 7.0 tiles (70 m) in a 0.6-tile (6 m) splash, ground targets only. The splash is the point: one blast catches several small bodies at once, so in the launch balance runs (800 a side, no techs) it beats Skitter swarms, Hexguard lines, the Courser, the Heron and the Salvo, and edges the Aurochs. It cannot shoot air, so the Rotor, the Mirage and the Seraph beat it, and it loses the straight fight to the big guns and area weapons (the Cutter, the Torch, the Weaver, the Breaker, the Landship, the Dreadnought) and to the Anvil. Deploy it just behind the front line, facing where the enemy's chaff will come from: the guns swing ±120° on their saddle ring at 210°/s, so the pack keeps trotting with the line while the guns stay on the swarm; a target past the arc means the whole frame has to turn, at 120°/s. Techs change its job: Pressure Chamber makes each blast 492 every 3 s (164 a second instead of 103), a burst gun that also goes through armour, since a 60-block Heavy Plating takes 186 of a plain blast but 432 of a charged one; Firebomb adds a mortar that lobs a 300-damage bomb every 8 s from 4 to 16 tiles (40–160 m) and leaves a 5 s fire carpet burning 270 a second; Fire Suppressant makes it immune to burn against the Torch; Long Barrels add 4 tiles of range, and Heavy Plating 40% hp and 60 block a hit against chaff. The bench is drawn short: the target carriage rides about 1.5 m out, the true reach is 70 m, and the firebomb's lob is drawn to the deck in front.
